Kyle Edmund vs. Andy Murray: Washington Open Preview
By Harry Floyd
Kyle Edmund takes on former world number one Andy Murray at the Washington Open this week. Here’s a look at the matchup.
Kyle Edmund has typically been an underdog when going up against the like of veteran greats such as Andy Murray. Having only played the former world number one three times throughout his young career, Edmund is still making a name for himself on the ATP World Tour. The younger British tennis star has recently emerged as one of the next rising stars in men’s singles tennis though. Earlier this year, he even passed Murray to become the top-ranked British male. Currently, Edmund sits close to his career high singles ranking in the number 18 spot.
Murray, on the other hand, is continuing his comeback to the ATP World Tour.
While the former world number one is 2-1 against Edmund, he is 0-1 this year. In Eastbourne, the younger British tennis star took Murray in straight sets, going 6-4 6-4. Now, he must be considered the favorite in their head-to-head matchup. This week at the Washington Open, Edmund is the tournament’s number four seed. The top seed is German tennis star and defending champion Alexander Zverev. A younger crop of players is representing men’s singles in the seeded position at the Washington Open. Also in action is Hyeon Chung and Denis Shapovalov among others. As for the veterans, American John Isner enters as the second seed.
Kyle Edmund has the slight edge over former world number one Andy Murray at the Washington Open. The 23-year-old British tennis star is 1-2 against Murray but 1-0 when facing him in 2018. Murray continues to make his return to the ATP World Tour from his ongoing injury issues.
Kyle Edmund and Andy Murray square off on Wednesday at the Washington Open. Zverev is the defending champion at the ATP World Tour event in Washington, DC. Stay tuned to see if the younger British tennis star can even the scoreboard with Murray and make a title run.
