Eugenie Bouchard wins her opening round qualifier at the 2018 US Open. How far can the young Canadian tennis player advance?
Eugenie Bouchard defeats fellow countrywoman Carol Zhao in her opening round qualifier at the US Open. As the final Grand Slam of the calendar year is upon us, Genie and others are vying for the last burst of momentum before heading into the final months of the season. While the 2018 WTA Tour has not been her year, Bouchard has shown moments of brilliance.
Earlier this year at the Wimbledon Championships, Bouchard earned entry to the major in London the hard way. She gave an interview after her strong qualifying performance that gained her entry in the women’s singles main draw.
Up next for Bouchard at the US Open qualifying is Georgian tennis player Ekaterine Gorgodze. While Genie wins her first match in straight sets, going 6-0 6-1, she will need to keep it up if she hopes to make a major tournament run this year. The Canadian tennis star has two former fourth round appearances at Flushing Meadows. Her impressive runs came in 2014 and 2015. Bouchard has been in search of some momentum as of late and this could be her change to round out the 2018 WTA Tour in the form she would like.
Eugenie Bouchard remains an underdog at Flushing Meadows. The favorites must be Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, and Sloane Stephens among others. The women’s singles field is stacked.
Halep is coming off of a French Open victory. Wozniacki is the current Australian Open champion and Stephens is the defending champion in women’s singles at the US Open. Action at Flushing Meadows is sure to pit some of the greatest up and coming women’s stars against the veteran legends. Eugenie Bouchard and others in qualifying cannot miss a step in the coming days if they hope to contend with the favorites.
