The US Open is fast approaching with the usual names being mentioned when discussing who the favorite on the men’s side is.

Defending US Open champion Rafael Nadal is the first name from most people’s lips, followed closely by Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. As well as these three, one of the biggest dangers, especially on a hard court is Juan Martin del Potro who won the title nine years ago.

However, grand slams usually serve up a couple of surprise packages. Players who get to the last eight who we may have forgotten about or who have managed to find some good form out of nowhere. If seeded players are knocked out in the early rounds, the draw can sometimes open up massively as it did last year when Kevin Anderson reached the final.

Semi-final runs can also help players to raise their profile around the world. Marco Cecchinato had an excellent run at Roland Garros this year which included a memorable win over Djokovic. Britain’s Kyle Edmund had a similar run at the Australian Open at the start of the year. This list will summarise the top ten contenders to surprise in Flushing Meadows.
