Angelique Kerber: Can She Win Another US Open Title?
By Harry Floyd
Angelique Kerber enters 2018 US Open action as a former champion and player to beat. Can she go all the way at the Grand Slam though?
Angelique Kerber is a former world number one, three-time Grand Slam champion, surging veteran, and her resume includes a win at the US Open. In 2016, Kerber bookended her WTA Tour by winning the title at Flushing Meadows. Now, she is out to do it again.
That same year, Kerber kicked off her year with an Australian Open win. At the US Open, she would defeat Karolina Pliskova 6–3, 4–6, 6–4. This year at Flushing Meadows, the German tennis star is the major tournament’s fourth seed in the women’s singles draw.
Kerber is without a doubt a player to beat at the US Open. Her experience, combined with her fantastic play as of late, makes her a tough opponent for anyone she faces. Up first for Kerber at the Grand Slam is Russian tennis player Margarita Gasparyan. The 23-year-old Russian is into the first round of play for the first time in her career. While it is a historic moment for Gasparyan, she must be considered one of the biggest underdogs in the opening round of play. Kerber ought to be a heavy favorite for several rounds.
Angelique Kerber has returned to her 2016 form. Earlier this year, she won yet another Grand Slam singles title, earning her first ever Wimbledon win. Now, she is out for her second win at the US Open.
The field in women’s singles tennis is stacked this year at the US Open. While Angelique Kerber is a good pick to make a deep run, she will need to contend with a highly competitive field full of other veterans and rising stars. Simona Halep enters as the top seed and must be someone to watch moving forward. Stay tuned to see how Angie fares in her early round action.
