Canadian tennis player Genie Bouchard is at the Japan Women’s Open this week. Jockeying for a place in the WTA Top 100, the young Bouchard finds herself up against a tough competitor in Nao Hibino first at the event. The 23-year-old Hibino has 1 WTA singles title to her name to go along with 7 ITF titles. While Bouchard is a former runner-up finisher at the Japan Women’s Open, she has been inconsistent throughout her time on the 2018 WTA Tour.
Genie did fight her way into the main draw at this year’s US Open. She would fall in the round of 64 but not before cruising through qualifying and winning her opening round match in straight sets. The women’s singles title went to Naomi Osaka who defeated American tennis legend Serena Williams in a historic finals meeting.
In 2013, Bouchard lost a finals meeting at the Japan Women’s Open to Samantha Stosur. The Australian tennis veteran would take their match, winning 7–6, 6–3. It was her second title at the event. Stosur also completed back-to-back wins by taking the title again in 2014.
Genie Bouchard is coming off of a solid performance at the 2018 US Open. She then followed up her play with an opening round loss at the WTA 125K Chicago. Now, Bouchard needs a win over Nao Hibino in her first match at the Japan Women’s Open.
Fans know Genie Bouchard for the lavish lifestyle that she portrays off the courts. When not playing on the WTA Tour, the young Canadian is no stranger to sharing what she’s up to via social media. This posting, for example, shows Genie enjoying the Swiss Alps before a tournament earlier this year. Stay tuned to see if the Canadian can notch an opening round win in Japan.
