Dominic Thiem: World Number 8 Remains Favorite At St. Petersburg

Dominic Thiem is the top seed in men’s singles at the 2018 St. Petersburg Open. He ought to continue advancing this week.

Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem is one of the best rising stars on the ATP World Tour. He began shocking the men’s tennis field in recent years, even reaching as high as the world number four position last year. Currently, Thiem comes in as the world number eight in men’s singles. He is the top seed and heavy favorite moving forward at the 2018 St. Petersburg Open.

Up next for the tournament’s top seed is young Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev. The top seed is fresh off of a straight set win. He takes down Strugg 7-6 6-4 in their meeting.

Medvedev is the tournament’s eighth seed this week. He is yet to drop a single set at the St. Petersburg Open and is also looking strong. Thiem cannot take him for granted.

Earlier this year, Dominic Thiem reached the finals at the 2018 French Open. Falling to 11-time champion Rafael Nadal, the young Austrian showed that he is closing in on a grand slam singles title. It is only a matter of time.

As of right now, Dominic Thiem is in the eighth position in the ATP Race to London. He must keep up his strong play down the stretch if he hopes to hang onto his spot in the field. Favorites for the end of year tournament include Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic is in action at the 2018 Laver Cup this week in Chicago, United States. He and Roger Federer headline a star-studded field of veteran legends and young rising stars in men’s singles tennis. Thiem and others, however, remain in action around the world.
