Dominic Thiem Takes St. Petersburg Title, Moves In Rankings

Dominic Thiem is the champion in men’s singles at the 2018 St. Petersburg Open. His win moves him up in the ATP singles rankings and Race to London.

Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem is riding high after his fantastic run in St. Petersburg. Thiem takes the title, defeating Martin Klizan in the finals. The top seed and favorite, Thiem closed out an impressive run where he dropped just a single set. He defeats Klizan, winning 6-3 6-1. Klizan is a former champion at the event, winning back in 2012.

Looking ahead on the 2018 ATP World Tour, Thiem is in a strong position moving forward.

His title-win at the St. Petersburg Open thrusts him into the world number seven ranking in men’s singles He also moves up one place in the ATP Race to London, jumping ahead of South African tennis star Kevin Anderson. Thiem is in the seventh position in the Race to London.

In St. Petersburg, the young Austrian defeats the likes of Jan-Lennard Struff, Daniil Medvedev, Roberto Bautista Agut, and then Klizan in the finals.

Dominic Thiem is a player to watch heading toward the ATP Finals. He is seeking his third straight end of year ATP Finals appearance. At just 25-years-old, Thiem represents a new generation in men’s singles tennis.

Besides Dominic Thiem, veteran greats have overtaken the 2018 ATP World Tour. Other favorites heading toward the ATP Finals, include the likes of Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic. All three are in prime positions in the Race to London. They have brought back the concept of the Big Four minus Andy Murray. Both Djokovic and Federer were in action this past week at the 2018 Laver Cup where Team Europe took the title for the second year running.
