Upsets Everywhere: 2018 Shanghai Masters Early Round Recaps

Early round action at the 2018 Shanghai Masters sees upsets everywhere in men’s singles. Here’s a look at some of the matches.

While defending champion Roger Federer is gearing up for yet another run at the Shanghai Masters, several top players in men’s singles tennis have seen early round upsets. Among those seeing defeat are some of the best players on tour this year. 2018 Australian Open runner up Marin Cilic is ousted by 22-year-old Nicolás Jarry in three sets.

The young tennis player from Chile upsets Cilic, winning their match 2-6 7-6 7-5. He was fresh off of a win over another veteran star in Mischa Zverev.

Also seeing an early exit is young Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem. He falls to veteran Matthew Ebden in a tough three set loss. While Thiem is ousted from the men’s singles side of the action, he does remain alive in men’s doubles. His doubles partner is Swedish veteran Robert Lindstedt.

Another star in Milos Raonic finds himself out after his first match at the Shanghai Masters. He is defeated by Mackenzie McDonald. Raonic continues to struggle in his comeback from injury on the ATP World Tour.

The 2018 Shanghai Masters is seeing several top names in men’s singles tennis dropping early on. Among the early round upsets are Dominic Thiem, Marin Cilic, Milos Raonic, Gael Monfils, and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Several rising stars in men’s singles tennis also see early exits. Players such as American Frances Tiafoe and Argentine Diego Schwartzman are ousted from the Shanghai Masters. Despite the barrage of upsets so far, top players such as Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer remain in the action. Other players to watch include Kyle Edmund, Juan Martin del Potro, Alexander Zverev, Hyeon Chung, and recent China Open champion Nikoloz Basilashvili.
