Gael Monfils Seeks Elusive Second Title In One Year
By Harry Floyd
French tennis veteran Gael Monfils is a fan favorite and highly accomplished player on tour. He reaches the semifinals at the European Open.
Gael Monfils is on the verge of yet another title-shot on the ATP World Tour. He reaches the semifinals this week at the European Open in Antwerp, Belgium. Up next for Monfils is second seed Diego Schwartzman of Argentina. Monfils is the tournament’s sixth seed in the men’s singles action. On the other side of the semifinals is Kyle Edmund taking on Frenchman Richard Gasquet.
Somehow, despite his impressive career, Monfils is yet to win more than one ATP singles title in any given year. He is one match away from a shot at a second title this year.
Earlier on the 2018 ATP World Tour, the French tennis star took home the title in Doha. While he went through 2017 without a win on tour, Monfils has roared back. Playing somewhat selectively nowadays, he may not be quite the player he used to be, but the Frenchman is capable of a deep run at any given tournament. He finds himself in a premier position this week at the European Open. Standing in his way, however, is a tough player in Schwartzman.
Gael Monfils is into the semifinals at the European Open. He has never recorded more than one ATP singles title in any given year on tour. On the verge of another title-shot, Monfils could make history for himself if he can keep up the momentum this week.
Elsewhere in the tennis world, the WTA Finals is shaping up in Singapore. Other stars in women’s singles are competing at the Luxembourg Open where top seed Julia Goerges finds herself up against Eugenie Bouchard of Canada. At the European Open though, Gael Monfils takes on the second seed next for a chance at the finals. Stay tuned to see if the French tennis veteran can break his single-title per year streak and win a second on the 2018 ATP World Tour.
