Simona Halep Looks Ahead To 2019 Without Coach Darren Cahill
By Harry Floyd
World number one Simona Halep will move on without coach Darren Cahill in the new year as he steps away from the sport for twelve months.
Simona Halep and coach Darren Cahill have achieved new heights in women’s singles tennis together. Throughout the 2017 and 2018 WTA Tour, Halep has soared back atop the singles rankings. A finals appearance at Melbourne Park earlier this year made the Romanian look more and more likely to notch a grand slam singles title in the near future. Then, she reached the finals at Roland Garros where she took home her first career major tournament win.
Alongside Cahill, Halep has become a household name on the WTA Tour. He and the Romanian tennis star took to social media to announce his stepping away for the time being. Check out the exchange and announcements here for more.
Halep, who has stepped away toward the end of this season due to ongoing injury issues, will now need to reevaluate her coaching situation along with her recovery process this off season.
Simona Halep and Darren Cahill will part ways on the 2019 WTA Tour.
Cahill, who could return to coach the world number one in the near future, is taking a break from coaching in order to spend time with his family while his children enter key stages in their lives.
The Romanian tennis star needs to determine her next steps regarding coaching along with how she will address her health and scheduling in the coming year.
While Simona Halep has dominated women’s singles tennis as of late, plenty of other strong players have emerged. Veteran greats like Angelique Kerber and Petra Kvitova have made resurgences, but younger stars such as Caroline Wozniacki, Naomi Osaka, and Garbine Muguruza among others are making names for themselves.
Women’s singles tennis is more competitive than ever before and a coaching stage at a critical juncture in a career can make all the difference. How Simona Halep reacts to the transition will reveal whether or not she is able to retain her place atop the sport.
