By Harry Floyd
The 2018 Australian Open was one for the history books. Here’s a look back at the champions in men’s and women’s singles.
As the tennis season gears up for the coming year, let’s take a moment to appreciate the champions at the 2018 Australian Open. Action at Melbourne Park always features the best in men’s and women’s tennis vying for the first Grand Slam title of the WTA Tour and ATP World Tour. This past year, the major tournament witnessed a veteran legend take another title and one of the greats joining the elite ranks of Grand Slam champions.
On the women’s singles side, Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki took her first ever title in Grand Slam singles action. Despite being a former world number one, Wozniacki was yet to win at a major tournament prior to the 2018 Australian Open.
Former world number one Wozniacki touched career heights throughout 2009 and 2010. Making a finals appearance at the 2009 US Open and going on a strong run of tennis in the following year, she burst onto the scene. Her first career Grand Slam title would be several years down the line though. At the 2018 Australian Open, Wozniacki met Romanian great Simona Halep in the finals.
Roger Federer and Caroline Wozniacki make history at the 2018 Australian Open.
Throughout her time at Melbourne Park, the Danish tennis star defeated the likes of Kiki Bertens, Carla Suarez Navarro, and Elise Mertens among others. Her Grand Slam title was years in the making.
On the men’s singles side, veteran tennis legend Roger Federer found his rhythm in the major tournament as he has many times before. His title at Melbourne Park would be his 20th career Grand Slam singles win. In the finals, Federer met Croatian great Marin Cilic.
Federer defeats Cilic in an epic five-set thriller at the 2018 Australian Open. He would make the rest of his ATP World Tour another massive success, cementing his legacy as one of the best, if not the best tennis player, to ever step onto a court. With the 2019 WTA Tour and ATP World Tour right around the corner, both Wozniacki and Federer look to defend their Australian Open titles.
