The first Grand Slam of the calendar year is the Australian Open and we’re here to make some way too early predictions in men’s and women’s singles.

Two players have dominated the Australian Open in men’s singles in recent years. The defending champion is Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer. He has won back to back in both 2017 and 2018. The other player to perform incredibly well at Melbourne Park is Serbian superstar Novak Djokovic. The current world number one took titles in 2015 and 2016.

Both Federer and Djokovic have six men’s singles titles a piece at the Australian Open. They have overtaken the first major tournament of the ATP World Tour throughout the last decade and both must be considered heavy contenders in the coming year.

The edge has to goto Djokovic at the 2019 Australian Open. Nole is surging right now on the ATP World Tour. He is coming off of a 2018 complete with two Grand Slam titles at both the Wimbledon Championships and the US Open. After bouncing back from injury at the start of the year, Djokovic found his rhythm and rocketed to the world number one ranking.

Federer has finished his 2018 ATP World Tour strong, coming in at the world number three ranking. He will be, however, a slight underdog to the likes of Djokovic and possible ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev. The young German tennis player is due for a Grand Slam singles title and is fresh off of an ATP Finals victory over Djokovic. Look for both Sascha and Nole to be the players to beat on the men’s singles side of the action.
