American tennis star Sloane Stephens is carrying some serious momentum from Grand Slams and the WTA Finals into the 2019 WTA Tour.

It was just one year ago that American tennis star Sloane Stephens battled back into contention and took home her first career Grand Slam singles title. That came at the 2017 US Open. This year, Stephens was unable to defend her women’s singles title at Flushing Meadows, but she did put on a solid performance at the major tournament. Stephens reached the quarterfinals.

Earlier in the year, the American came just shy of a win at Roland Garros. Falling to Simona Halep in the finals, Stephens did at least walk away with a positive runner-up finish at the French Open. Fans are noticing her impressive play more and more at tournaments that matter.

To end her 2018 WTA Tour, Stephens took on Elina Svitolina in the WTA Finals. The end of year event in Singapore features the best of the best in women’s singles tennis and Stephens outplayed all but one player in Svitolina. Stephens has momentum right now, and there’s no reason to think she won’t carry that into the early 2019 action.

Sloane Stephens can reach the world number one ranking on the 2019 WTA Tour.

At this year’s US Open, Naomi Osaka shocked the field and took home the biggest title of her young career. It was back to back years of a young rising star reaching glory at Flushing Meadows. Osaka took down American legend Serena Williams in the finals.

In 2017, Stephens defeated another fellow countrywoman in Madison Keys in the finals. The two players represent the next generation of great women’s singles players from the United States. Although Williams manages moments of brilliance even still, Stephens, Keys, and others are the future for American tennis. Stephens can overtake all others in this conversation if she reaches the world number one ranking on the upcoming WTA Tour.
