Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem is among those top players who see an unexpected early exit this year from the Australian Open.

Dominic Thiem has been OUSTED from the 2019 Australian Open. The young Austrian tennis star is among the top players in men’s singles tennis in recent years. He reached the finals of the 2018 French Open, falling to Spanish legend Rafael Nadal. At Melbourne Park this year, he sees one of the biggest upsets at the hands of teenager Alexei Popyrin.

Retiring in the third set, Thiem is out of the Australian Open as the Australian teenager scores an incredible win 7-5, 6-4, 2-0. The seventh seeded Thiem has some recovering to due and there is no doubt that his five set first round match took a toll on him heading into the second round of play. Popyrin faces French tennis star Lucas Pouille next.

How about Serena Williams so far at the Australian Open? The American tennis legend, arguably the greatest tennis player to ever grace a court, cruises into the third round of play this year. While she has played intermittently in the past year, Williams still has her a-game. Her impressive performances at both Wimbledon and the US Open last year proved that Williams is not going away just yet. She defeats Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the second round at Melbourne Park.

Never discount Serena Williams. She defeats Eugenie Bouchard to reach the third round.

Although Bouchard entered the Australian Open with some momentum, it was not enough to get past the American great. Genie won the women’s doubles title alongside Kenin at the Auckland Open, signaling a comeback for the young Canadian.

The matchup with Williams so early at the Grand Slam is a tough one. She won her opener with ease but it is the seven-time Australian Open champion who advances to face 18-year-old Dayana Yastremska next. The young Ukrainian is a heavy underdog against Williams but is coming off of a major upset over the 23rd seeded Carla Suárez Navarro in the second round. The Spanish tennis veteran traded sets with Yastremska before dropping the third and exiting Melbourne Park.
