Australian Open Third Round Upsets and Updates
By Harry Floyd
Several favorites advance on both the men’s and women’s side of the action during the third round of the 2019 Australian Open.
Among OUR FAVORITES to take the men’s singles title at the 2019 Australian Open are ATP Finals champion Alexander Zverev, Japanese great Kei Nishikori, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and of course Novak Djokovic. All five advance through the third round of play.
Federer, in particular, sets up an extremely interesting matchup with Next Generation ATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece in the fourth round. The young tennis player is coming off of a third round win over the 19th seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili.
Nishikori faces Pablo Carreño Busta next. The Spanish tennis star is also an outside contender for the title and should pose a challenge to the Japanese great. He makes it back to back years of reaching the fourth round of play and is fresh off of an impressive third round win over Italian tennis player Fabio Fognini. Carreño Busta completes the slight upset, knocking out the 12th seed in a four set thriller.
Two former world number ones in women’s singles advance through their third round matches. Both Karolína Plíšková and Garbiñe Muguruza win tough matches to setup a showdown with one another at the 2019 Australian Open. Plíšková should be a slight favorite and is our pick to advance. Keep an eye on that matchup.
Also winning their third round matches are tennis stars Angelique Kerber, Elina Svitolina, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, and Naomi Osaka. The women’s singles field is pitting some of the very best the sport has seen in some time up against one another and the road to a title is only getting more and more difficult. The edge has to go to those with Grand Slam experience right now.
