Australian Open Fourth Round Upsets and Updates

Women’s singles saw a massive upset over the second seeded and former champion Angelique Kerber at the Australian Open.

Angelique Kerber has been OUSTED by a rising American tennis star in Danielle Collins. Read more about their fourth round matchup here. Collins advances to meet Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova who defeats Sloane Stephens, reaching the quarterfinals of the 2019 Australian Open. It is the American’s first time getting past the first round of any major.

Other winners included former world number one Karolína Plíšková. She defeats another former world number one in women’s singles, Garbine Muguruza. The Czech takes the match with ease, winning 6-3 6-1. WTA Finals champion Elina Svitolina knocks out Madison Keys and inches one step closer to her first ever major tournament title.

Also into the quarterfinals is current US Open champion Naomi Osaka. She will square off with Svitolina next at the Australian Open. Women’s singles, just like on the men’s side of the draw, still features some of the very best in the sport. Petra Kvitova and Ashleigh Barty both win their fourth round matches to setup a huge meeting.

Barty defeats Russian legend Maria Sharapova in order to advance. She will need to upset another veteran great in Kvitova next if she hopes to reach the semifinals at Melbourne Park.

Also winning on the men’s singles side is Milos Raonic and Lucas Pouille. The two meet in the quarters after Raonic upsets the fourth seeded Alexander Zverev. The ATP Finals champion will have to wait until the French Open to vie once again for his first Grand Slam title. Raonic, leaning on his expeince takes down Zverev in straight sets 6-1 6-1 7-6 (7-5). Check back for all of your updates on the 2019 Australian Open action as we get closer and closer to the finals.
