Action at the 2019 Rotterdam Open is underway and the tournament sees an unexpected early upset in the form of a Damir Dzumhur win.

Damir Dzumhur does the seemingly impossible by stunning rising ATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas at the 2019 Rotterdam Open. Tsitsipas made headlines as of late by reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open. There, he fell to Spanish superstar Rafael Nadal but not before knocking out the likes of Roger Federer and Roberto Bautista Agut among others.

The win for Dzumhur comes at just the right time. He enters the Rotterdam Open with an ATP singles record of 0-3 so far on the 2019 ATP Tour. Dzumhur defeats Tsitsipas in three sets, winning 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

Rotterdam is a historic tournament. Its original champion was tennis legend Arthur Ashe back in 1972. Ashe, along with Federer hold the record for the most singles titles at the event with three. Over the years, other greats such as Jimmy Connors and Bjorn Borg, and Andy Murray all have tasted glory at the Rotterdam Open.

The 26-year-old Dzumhur touched career heights on the 2018 ATP Tour when he reached the world number 23 ranking in men’s singles. He enters the action in Rotterdam as the world number 56 and looks to make a run following his big win over Tsitsipas.

How far can Dzumhur advance at the 2019 Rotterdam Open? Up next for him is Kazakhstani tennis veteran Mikhail Kukushkin. Fresh off of a win over Robin Haase, Kukushkin is not going to be a pushover for Dzumhur. We will give the younger Dzumhur the edge, but he may again need three sets to knock out Kukushkin if he hopes to continue on.

Other early round winners at the 2019 Rotterdam Open include the likes of veteran great Gael Monfils, recent Open Sud de France champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, and top seeded Kei Nishikori. Tsitsipas was the third seed in Rotterdam. The tournament is jam packed with talent in men’s singles and Dzumhur will need every bit of momentum he can gather if he hopes to make a title run this month.
