Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki withdraws from another tournament due to a viral illness. She continues to miss key playing time.

This year’s Dubai Tennis Championships is moving forward without one of its former champions in Caroline Wozniacki. The 2011 champion in Dubai misses a second straight tournament after withdrawing due to a viral illness. Wozniacki was originally set to take on Stefanie Voegele. Her opponent then faced Polona Hercog instead, defeating Hercog in the round of 64.

Wozniacki missing out on action in Dubai continues a tough and slow start to the 2019 WTA Tour for the former world number one. She also pulled out of the Qatar Total Open last week. There, Elise Mertens defeated the top seeded Simona Halep in the finals.

With Wozniacki out of the Dubai Tennis Championships, back to back champion Elina Svitolina remains a great pick to take the title. A three-peat could be tough though as other tennis stars such as Halep, Naomi Osaka, and Petra Kvitova make up the field.

Wozniacki is yet to play a tournament since the 2019 Australian Open. At Melbourne Park this year, the Danish tennis star fell to Maria Sharapova in the round of 32. As Wozniacki was the 2018 champion at the Australian Open, her difficult seeding pit her against one of the greatest the sport has ever seen in Sharapova early on.

Now, we have to wonder when Wozniacki will be back to top form. Hopefully she can return to the WTA Tour as soon as possible, but even when she does, it could take several matches or tournaments to get back to her best. As of writing, she is the world number 14 in women’s singles tennis. She will need to battle back to crack the WTA Top 10 and beyond.
