Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios defies the odds and the haters by take the title in men’s singles this week at the Mexican Open.

It seems as though Nick Kyrgios might be ready to become a top player on the ATP Tour. The young Australian has undeniable talent and has been an entertaining player to watch for some time now. This past week in Acapulco, he defeats arguably the next big star in men’s singles during the Mexican Open finals.

Defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets, Kyrgios is champion. Winning 6-3, 6-4, Kyrgios completes a dream run of tennis that featured wins over Andreas Seppi, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, John Isner, and then Zverev.

Kyrgios was the first to acknowledge the fact that he does not behave like a Top 10 player. He often leaves fans and players alike wondering which version of himself will show up to any given match. This week at the Mexican Open, we got a red hot Kyrgios even though he admitted to doing things like going jet skiing just prior to his final with the second seeded Zverev.

The next step for Kyrgios could be to get a coach. He appears to want to be more disciplined and, if he chooses to do so, he will be a top contender on the tour. The title win in Acapulco is his fifth career ATP singles title. If he buckles down and gets serious about being a top player, there will be many more titles coming his way.

Few players have the bravado of Kyrgios. He mentions feeding off of the boos and cheers from the crowd this past week. Only someone with his approach can show up with a loose gameplan, go toe to toe with Nadal in a heated match both emotionally and skill wise, knock off even more tennis legends, and then oust arguably the best young player on the ATP Tour with ease in the finals. Imagine if the young Australian decides to give 110 percent.
