Alexander Zverev stumbles, OUSTED from Indian Wells Masters
By Harry Floyd
The third seed is no more as Alexander Zverev sees an unexpected upset at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters. Here’s how it happened.
Alexander Zverev entered the 2019 Indian Wells Masters as a top contender and player to beat in men’s singles. The young German tennis star has emerged as one of the best on the ATP Tour as of late. Last year, Zverev clinched a HUGE win by taking the title at the ATP Finals in London. There, he knocked out current world number one Novak Djokovic in the final.
After an opening round win, Zverev sees a different outcome in his round of 32 matchup against fellow German tennis player Jan-Lennard Struff.

In the round of 64, Zverev eased past Martin Kližan, winning in straight sets. His 6-3, 2-0 win advanced him to a meeting with Struff. In Struff’s opening match, he knocked out Australian tennis player John Millman in straight sets.
Then, originally scheduled to face Grigor Dimitrov, he took on Ričardas Berankis instead, defeating him in a hard fought three set winner.
Following his upset win over Zverev, Struff remained in awe. He acknowledge that the third seed missed some opportunities but was undoubtedly satisfied with his own performance. He wins the meeting 6-3, 6-1, taking just 70 minutes to knock out one of the favorites at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters.
This is one of the biggest upsets so far at the Indian Wells Masters. Another major upset could be Caroline Wozniacki’s loss in the round of 64 but Struff easily tops the list in terms of men’s singles so far at the event. Now, it’s all of a matter of seeing how far he can go at Indian Wells.
Up next for the German tennis player is another tough opponent in Milos Raonic. The 13th seeded Raonic has two wins over both American Sam Querrey and then Marcos Giron so far. Struff takes on Raonic on Wednesday.
Check back to see how far Struff can advance at the 2019 Indian Wells Masters. As for Alexander Zverev, he will need to bounce back quickly for the early round exit this month.
