Garbine Muguruza plays ‘best tennis’ to defend Monterrey Open title
By Harry Floyd
Garbine Muguruza makes it back to back years winning the Monterrey Open title in women’s singles. Let’s recap how she did it.
The championship match at the 2019 Monterrey Open gave Garbine Muguruza a chance to defend her title in women’s singles. Up against her, however, was another experienced and former world number one player in Victoria Azarenka.
Last year at Monterrey, Muguruza defeated Timea Babos in a hard fought three set victory. She took the title in 2018, winning 3–6, 6–4, 6–3. This year, she doesn’t have to go the distance to defeat Azarenka. Muguruza wins 6-1, 3-1.

Winning with a player retiring due to injury is not the way you ever expect it to happen, but Muguruza can walk away feeling accomplished after this one. She completes a fantastic run of tennis at the 2019 Monterrey Open.
Muguruza defeated the likes of Elena-Gabriela Ruse, Margarita Gasparyan, Kristina Mladenovic, and Magdaléna Rybáriková prior to her meeting with Vika. She also drops just one set during the entire tournament.
Hats off to Muguruza for repeating her success in Monterrey. Following the title win, the former world number one spoke to the media and fans.
"“Every title is sweet. The ending was a little strange, [Azarenka] was injured, but it’s a special feeling, winning last year and now this year. I did have tough opponents, this year’s draw was the best… and, well, I played my best tennis.” – Garbine Muguruza following her 2019 Monterrey Open title in women’s singles"
As for Azarenka, she jumps seven places in the WTA rankings, moving into the world number 60 position in women’s singles tennis. Keep an eye on both her and Muguruza throughout the upcoming weeks and months.
With the French Open right around the corner, former champion Muguruza can take her title win at the Monterrey Open and use it as momentum heading into the lead up to Roland Garros. She did look like she was playing her best tennis these past two weeks and could very well emerge as a top contender on the 2019 WTA Tour.
