Who’s the favorite at the 2019 Mutua Madrid Open? That’s a tough one to answer when it comes to the men’s singles field.

As we await the main draw in men’s singles for the 2019 Mutua Madrid Open, let’s take a look at the early favorites. Some of the biggest names in tennis are making appearances at in Madrid. One of those is Swiss icon Roger Federer. He is not known for playing much during the clay court season as of late. That all changes this year.

Federer is a former champion in Madrid. He won first in 2006, then a second time in 2009, and then a third in 2012. For not being the go-to name when it comes to clay, Federer’s history in Madrid is impressive.

Of course we have to consider King of Clay Rafael Nadal a top contender, if not the favorite at the upcoming event. Rafa has a record five men’s singles titles at the Mutua Madrid Open.

Nadal is currently coming off of three consecutive semifinals appearances at Indian Wells, Monte-Carlo, and then Barcelona. Rafa appears due to take home a title.

Don’t forget about Novak Djokovic. The Serbian tennis star has won the last three Grand Slams on the men’s singles circuit. He, like Federer and Nadal, is also a former champion in Madrid.

Djokovic took titles in both 2011 and then again in 2016. In 2011, he defeated Nadal in the finals. In 2016, it was Andy Murray he took down. Do not discount Djokovic.

The defending champion at the Mutua Madrid Open is rising ATP star Alexander Zverev. He is currently off to a winning start in Munich. Zverev is looking to regain some momentum on the ATP Tour. If he can keep it up in Munich and then carry that success into Madrid, Zverev will be dangerous. Last year, he defeated back-to-back runner-up Dominic Thiem in the finals.
