BMW Open: Expect the Unexpected in Men’s Singles Tennis
By Harry Floyd
Alexander Zverev is OUSTED from the 2019 BMW Open and we have some serious shakeups heading into the upcoming week.
Top seed and two-time defending champion Alexander Zverev heads home before the final at the 2019 BMW Open. He sees an extremely unexpected upset at the hands of young Chilean tennis player Cristian Garín in the quarterfinals. Garín would advance to the semis, defeating the third seeded Marco Cecchinato to reach the finals.
Zverev going home early will shakeup the men’s singles ranking this week. Now, he will drop from the world number three position, giving way to tennis legend Roger Federer.
The Swiss tennis icon has not played a match during the clay court season yet and he is still moving up in the rankings. Lookout for Federer. We have already placed him atop our favorites at the upcoming French Open where he will play for the first time in many years. Federer is arguably the greatest tennis player ever and now he will round out the top three in the men’s singles rankings along with some familiar names.
Federer is set to join Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal within the top three. Zverev needs to find his footing, and fast. His opener at the BMW Open was a solid straight set victory. Garín gave him trouble though. Zverev needs to reevaluate his approach quickly.
As for Garín, he would reach the finals, facing young Italian tennis player Matteo Berrettini fresh off of a huge semifinals win over Roberto Bautista Agut. The two battled back and forth, forcing a third set in what would be an epic championship match. It is Garín, however, who emerges victorious at the 2019 BMW Open, winning the final 6-1 3-6 7-6 (1).
As the 2019 BMW Open comes to a close, we look ahead to the upcoming action at the Madrid Open and ultimately the French Open. Check back to see how the best players in both men’s and women’s tennis fare leading up to the biggest event of the clay court season at Roland Garros.
