Maria Sakkari is now a WTA singles champion, claiming her first ever title by winning the 2019 Morocco Open over Johanna Konta.

The 2019 Morocco Open brings a brand new champion into the spotlight in women’s singles tennis. 23-year-old Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari has danced around a title in the past, but now she finally has one. She will surely add several more to her resume throughout her career. Sakkari takes down British number one Johanna Konta in the finals at the Morocco Open.

Prior to the championship match, the young Greek tennis player was on a mad tear at the tournament. She was yet to drop a single set heading into her meeting with Konta.

Sakkari’s most difficult match before the finals came against Elise Mertens. The Belgian professional tennis player was also the defending champion at the event… Mertens took Sakkari to a tiebreak in the second set but ultimately would come up short. The tournament’s sixth seed was relentless all week long at the Morocco Open.

After falling behind in the first set with Konta, Sakkari battled back with true determination. She would end up taking home her first title in an epic three-set thriller, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Konta was the seventh seed at the Morocco Open this year. Hats off to the British tennis star for a strong runner-up performance. She ousted the likes of second seed Hsieh Su-wei in the quarterfinals and then fourth seed Ajla Tomljanović in the semifinals.

Sakkari was just too good in the final for Konta to handle. She takes home her first ever WTA Tour singles title and is definitely going to be someone to lookout for the rest of the year.
