Upsets continue into the quarterfinals at the 2019 Madrid Open. This time around, it is the top seed Naomi Osaka who is going home.

Naomi Osaka entered the 2019 Madrid Open as the top seed in the women’s singles field. She falls to up and coming Swiss tennis star Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals. Bencic takes the match in a back forth three sets, winning 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Osaka earned two wins in Madrid before going home. Her opener, however, was another tough three set match. There, she managed to escape Sara Sorribes Tormo by dominating the third with a 6-0 win.

The top seed was not so fortunate in her meeting with Bencic. With Osaka out of the mix, all eyes turn toward some other heavy favorites.

Winning her quarterfinals match is American tennis star Sloane Stephens. She defeats Petra Martic in straight sets to advance. Also winning is defending French Open champion Simona Halep. She ought to be considered the favorite moving forward as she dispatches the red hot Ashleigh Barty. Halep wins their match 7-5 7-5.

Still to wrap up her quarterfinals match is defending and three-time champion Petra Kvitova. As of writing, she is underway against Kiki Bertens and has dropped the first set. Bertens jumps ahead, gaining momentum with a strong 6-2 win in the first. This would be another massive upset and make Halep arguably the favorite and player to beat moving forward. The first of the two semifinals meetings is already set to be Halep taking on Bencic. The winner of Kvitova and Bertens will face off against Stephens.
