Novak Djokovic continues to make history at the Madrid Open
By Harry Floyd
The history making continues for the world number one following the 2019 Madrid Open. Novak Djokovic takes home yet another title.
World number one Novak Djokovic lives up to the billing this week at the 2019 Madrid Open. He defeats rising ATP star Stefanos Tsitsipas in the finals, winning in straight sets. Djokovic takes home his third career men’s singles title at the event, going 6-3 6-4 over the up and coming #NextGenATP player. Tsitsipas has been spectacular as of late too which makes the win even more impressive for Djokovic.
A third Madrid Open title means that Djokovic now has 33 Masters 1000 wins. He ties Rafael Nadal at 33 and Djokovic completes his 200th career win over an ATP top ten opponent. The world number one continues to assert his dominance atop the sport.
Along with the Grand Slams of course, Djokovic said that “this is as important and as good as it gets.” 33 Masters 1000 titles is amazing. A dominant finals performance over an opponent like Tsitsipas is amazing. His straight set win over a stellar clay court player in Dominic Thiem during the semifinals was amazing. Overall, Djokovic continues to amaze.
Who will stop the world number one as we progress toward more big tournaments, including the 2019 French Open? One has to think that Nadal, who fared extremely well all things considered will be a top contender in the upcoming weeks. Roger Federer will also be in the mix, along with players like Thiem and Tsitsipas.
Tournaments are Djokovic’s to lose though. He deserves to be world number one right now. The Serbian tennis star has won the last three Grand Slams and quickly shook off some arguably mediocre performances in his last three events. Djokovic did not fade for long, immediately jumping back into the spotlight with a HUGE WIN at the 2019 Madrid Open.
So where does Djokovic go from here? The Rome Masters is upon us. This is a tournament Djokovic is a four-time champion at. Even though Nadal is the defending and eight-time champ, one must consider Nole the player to beat. Hats off to another fantastic win at the Madrid Open and we cannot wait to see we he will deliver next.
