Angelique Kerber is leaving Roland Garros early this year. It comes as no surprise though and let’s take a closer look at why.

Angelique Kerber falls to 18-year-old Russian tennis player Anastasia Potapova in the first round of the 2019 French Open. The German tennis veteran did enter this year’s action as the fifth seed in women’s singles. Her early exit, however, is no major surprise to anyone.

The French Open is the only one of the Grand Slam events that Kerber is yet to win. The clay court season has never been her strongest time of year. Prevsioualy, she did reach the quarterfinals twice at Roland Garros but she won’t even come close this time around.

Last year, Kerber won her first ever title at Wimbledon. We ought to keep an eye on her leading into action there again. For now though, action at Roland Garros rolls on without her.

The German tennis veteran has also been struggling with an ankle injury as of late. Potapova cruises past the former world number one, winning 6-4 6-2 on Court Philippe Chatrier. The up and coming tennis player was elated following her victory.

As for Kerber, we can expect her to rally back to top form in the coming months. Once she has more time to prove her health and once we’re beyond the clay court season, Kerber ought to be considered a top contender in women’s singles yet again. She played in both Stuttgart and Madrid recently but managed just one match win at each.

Kerber should not be concerned. As she exits Roland Garros, we keep an eye on several of the other top players in women’s singles. Garbine Muguruza, the 2016 champion at the French Open, was among the early winners so far. She should be someone to watch moving forward.
