Up and down Simona Halep should steady at the French Open
By Harry Floyd
Simona Halep is the defending champion at the French Open. She goes back and forth during her opener but manages to survive.
Romanian tennis star Simona Halep survives a hard fought match during her opener at Roland Garros. Halep enters the field in women’s singles this year as the defending French Open champion. Last year, she defeated American Sloane Stephens in the finals, earning her first career Grand Slam singles title.
This year, Halep enters the field as the third seed in women’s singles. Taking on Ajla Tomljanović of Australia first at Roland Garros, the Romanian tennis star faced a much bigger test than initially anticipated.
Halep manages to emerge on top, winning 6-2 3-6 6-1. Up next for the defending champion is Magda Linette of Poland. Linette has previously reached the third round of play at the French Open back in 2017.
We like Halep to take command in their upcoming meeting. Despite the back and forth nature of her opener, the third seed ought to find her rhythm against Linette. As Halep looks to steady her play, other tennis stars such as Serena Williams, Elina Svitolina, Garbine Muguruza, Madison Keys, and Naomi Osaka are all advancing.
The field in women’s singles is packed with talent this year at the French Open. Halep, like everyone else around her, has her work cut out for her if she hopes to take home yet another title. She should be considered the heavy favorite in her upcoming round of 64 match but will need to prove herself moving forward.
On the men’s singles side of the action, defending champion Rafael Nadal is also off to a winning start. So is Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Alexander Zverev, and many other top seeds. Other players to watch in the men’s field are Gael Monfils, Fabio Fognini, Roberto Bautista Agut, and Kei Nishikori among others. As for Simona Halep, she wins her opener. It wasn’t quite a convincing victory but we like her chances in her upcoming match.
