Simona Halep, Naomi Osaka among French Open winners
By Harry Floyd
Defending champion Simona Halep wins yet again at the 2019 French Open. So does the top seed in Naomi Osaka. Can either take the title?
Former world number one Simona Halep wins another back and forth match at the 2019 French Open. After surviving her opening round matchup against Ajla Tomljanović, Halep manages another three-set win over Polish tennis player Magda Linette.
Halep takes her round of 64 meeting, winning 6-4 5-7 6-3. The third seed hasn’t managed to dominate her opponents yet at Roland Garros. She is, however, winning. And that’s all that matters right now.
How far can Halep go at Roland Garros this year? Well, we think her shot at defending her title is still strong. The Romanian tennis star is among the best players in women’s singles tennis. If anything, two three-set wins only reinforces her resilience moving forward.
The field is stacked around her though. Players like top seed Naomi Osaka also remain alive. Osaka defeats tennis legend Victoria Azarenka in their round of 64 meeting. Osaka wins in three sets, rallying to take both the second and third sets. She now sets up a match with Kateřina Siniaková next at the 2019 French Open.
Action in women’s singles is seeing several veteran greats and up and comers making headlines this year at Roland Garros. Halep is among those right in the middle of the two groups. She is the defending champ, has plenty of experience, and is proven against nearly everyone on tour.
Check back to see how Simona Halep fares in her upcoming matches at the 2019 French Open. On the men’s singles side of play, veterans such as Gael Monfils are threatening deep tournaments runs. He seeks his first ever Grand Slam singles title. Others such as Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, and Rafael Nadal are making a case for themselves as they seek to retain their places atop the sport.
