Top 5 French Open Favorites: How Are They Doing So Far?
By Harry Floyd
Action at the 2019 French Open continues this weekend with several big names still alive. How are our top five favorites doing?
Let’s start with the top seed at this year’s French Open in Novak Djokovic. The Serbian tennis star made our list of the top five favorites in men’s singles as the second overall pick. He is arguably the favorite though, right along with two-time defending champion and 11-time overall champ Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic looks near-perfect so far at Roland Garros. He is living up to the billing as he goes for his fourth consecutive Grand Slam singles title.

The top seed defeated Hubert Hurkacz, Henri Laaksonen, and Salvatore Caruso in straight sets and seems poised to continue his strong play even deeper into the major tournament action. Look for Djokovic to remain a heavy favorite moving forward.
The other arguable favorite, and number one on our list, is Nadal. The King of Clay won his first two matches with ease before facing David Goffin in the round of 32. Goffin, an accomplished player in his own right, managed to take one set off of Rafa but ultimately it would be the defending champion who moves on.
We like Nadal’s chances in the round of 16 as he takes on Juan Ignacio Londero next. Can Nadal win yet another French Open men’s singles title? It’s hard to bet against him the way he is playing.
Alexander Zverev has made it an interesting run to say the least so far at Roland Garros. Of his three match wins, two of them went to five sets. An up and down past few weeks have made his chances look somewhat unpredictable. He is winning though. Zverev sets up a tough meeting with the red hot Fabio Fognini in the round of 16 next.
Dominic Thiem is looking for redemption from last year’s French Open. After finishing runner-up to Rafa, he is back and off to a good start. Winning his first two matches, Thiem takes on tennis veteran Pablo Cuevas in the round of 32. The fourth seed cannot discount Cuevas if he hopes to reach the round of 16 at Roland Garros.
Then of course, we have Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer. Similar to Djokovic, Federer has been near-perfect. He is yet to drop a single set and was taken to just one tiebreak thus far. Federer is into the round of 16 already, taking on Leonardo Mayer next. Check back to see how all five of these top French Open picks fare in their upcoming matches.
