French Open Favorites: Novak Djokovic or Alexander Zverev?
By Harry Floyd
Two of the French Open favorites face off in the quarterfinals this week at Roland Garros. Who will come out on top and reach the semis?
Novak Djokovic and Alexander Zverev are into the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and are mong the French Open favorites this year. Previously, we already had both of them among our TOP FIVE FAVORITES to take the men’s singles title at the major tournament.
The world number one Djokovic ought to be considered the favorite but anything can happen in this one. Zverev has managed to go toe to toe with Nole throughout his young career. He is an even 2-2 versus the legendary Djokovic.
It is Djokovic though who has won each of the previous three Grand Slam titles in men’s singles. He has an enormous amount of momentum and has played more consistently throughout the 2019 ATP Tour than Zverev.
Both players look good at Roland Garros so far. Djokovic is near-perfect, yet to drop a single set. Zverev survived his opener in dramatic fashion. He’s been tested throughout his run at the French Open. In many ways though, he has shown immense resilience.
Djokovic must be considered the favorite out of these two. The top seed was already among the French Open favorites, along with arguably Rafael Nadal for the title of overall favorite. Nadal is already into the semifinals. He has set up what will likely go down as one of the best matches of the year when he takes on Roger Federer in the semifinals.
As Djokovic and Zverev duke it out in the quarterfinals, we await the winner of the other matchup between Dominic Thiem and Karen Khachanov. Thiem is another one of our French Open favorites and these two represent the younger generation, along with Zverev. No matter what happens in the remaining quarterfinals action and the upcoming semis, we are sure to witness history in men’s singles at the 2019 French Open.
