Simona Halep is the defending champion in women’s singles at the French Open. She is inching closer to a shot at yet another title.

Everyone has been eager to see if Simona Halep is capable of defending her title in women’s singles at the French Open. The Romanian tennis star is a former world number one and is back in her element during the clay court season. Despite two three-set matches to kick off her run at Roland Garros, the defending champ looks like her usual self.

Halep is coming off of straight set wins over the likes of both Lesia Tsurenko and Iga Świątek. She gave up two games to Tsurenko during their first set and dropped just one game during her entire meeting with Świątek.

The third seeded Halep appears destined to reach the semifinals and take another crack at a title. In her way, however, is a young tennis star in the making. Amanda Anisimova is just 17-years-old and in the middle of a dream run at Roland Garros.

Anisimova is coming off of a huge win over another young tennis player in Aliona Bolsova during the round of 16. The unseeded Anisimova wins 6-3 6-0. The young American’s journey to the quarterfinals also featured a win over Aryna Sabalenka back in the round of 64. PLUS, she is yet to drop a single set this year at the French Open.

So, does Anisimova stand a chance against Halep? The defending champion must be considered the heavy favorite in the quarterfinals. Halep is almost unparalleled on clay and Anisimova is more or less unproven. The 17-year-old shows promise though. Her play is representative of a younger generation starting to prove themselves amongst the veteran greats.
