Ashleigh Barty enters the finals at the 2019 French Open with a shot at her first ever Grand Slam title when she takes on Markéta Vondroušová.

Australian tennis star Ashleigh Barty has been a player to watch in women’s singles for some time  now. We even had her on our top five sleepers to watch on the 2019 WTA Tour. Now, Barty is into the finals at the French Open with a shot at her first ever major tournament win.

Up against Barty, however, is another fresh face in the sport of tennis. Enter 19-year-old Markéta Vondroušová. The Czech tennis player is also going for her first ever Grand Slam win.

We did not necessarily expect to see either of these players in the finals. Barty has definitely shown promise throughout the past year though. She entered the field in women’s singles at Roland Garros as the eighth seed.

Vondroušová is a relative unknown. She did, however, reach the fourth round at the 2018 US Open this past year. The finals at a slam is a much bigger stage, but it’s not as though she’s come completely out of nowhere.

Barty has the edge in this one. Both players are on the younger side of the sport but she brings far more experience to the table. Barty has four career WTA singles titles whereas Vondroušová has just one. Both players have close to 70 percent singles match winning percentages. Barty, however, has a significant number of matches on Vondroušová. On a stage of this size, that has to count for something.

Even though Ashleigh Barty is our pick to take the title at the 2019 French Open, her challenger is in the middle of a dream run. Neither player has anything to lose and will be leaving it all on the courts. Elsewhere at Roland Garros, King of Clay Rafael Nadal awaits his championship opponent. Nadal ousts tennis legend Roger Federer in the semifinals and looks to win yet another title at the French Open.
