French Open Favors King of Clay Rafael Nadal Once More
By Harry Floyd
Rafael Nadal is your 2019 French Open men’s singles champion. His historic victory at Roland Garros marks championship number 12.
Dominic Thiem falls to King of Clay Rafael Nadal in the finals at the French Open for the second year in a row. Hats off to Thiem for another impressive major tournament run but it is Rafa who continues to make history at Roland Garros. The title makes it number 12 at the clay court major for Nadal. He remains unstoppable there.
Number 12 also marks his third consecutive men’s singles title at the French Open. Stan Wawrinka and Novak Djokovic interrupted Rafa’s run of titles by winning in 2015 and 2016. 2019, however, is Nadal’s as he has reasserted himself at the tournament yet again.

Nadal ousts Thiem for the second year running with a four set win in the finals. He defeats Thiem 6-3 5-7 6-1 6-1. After the second set, Rafa was in the drivers seat. Cruising to yet another title at Roland Garros, he proves once more that his talent on clay is undeniable.
Prior to the major tournament action, we predicted the top five favorites in men’s singles at the French Open. Not surprisingly, Nadal was among them.
All of the other four favorites fared extremely well though. Thiem was among the early favorites and there is no doubt that he will be back again next year to try for the title.
With number 12 in the books for Nadal, you can take a look at the previous 11 French Open wins for Rafa here. Number 12 was near-perfect for Nadal. He dropped just two sets throughout the entire tournament. One was to Belgian tennis star David Goffin and the other was to Thiem during the championship match.
Congratulations to Rafael Nadal on another historic win at the French Open. He remains the undisputed King of Clay. Rafa’s win also breaks up a streak of Grand Slam singles wins for Djokovic. The world number one had taken titles at each of the previous three majors. Rafa defends at Roland Garros though and regathers momentum during the clay court season just as he had planned.
