World number one Novak Djokovic falls in the semifinals at the 2019 French Open. Can he defend his title at Wimbledon though?

Novak Djokovic falls in an epic five-set match that spanned two days at Roland Garros this year. The winner, Dominic Thiem, advanced to face none other than Rafael Nadal in the finals. The loss marked an end to a streak of three consecutive Grand Slam singles title for Djokovic dating back to Wimbledon last year.

In 2018, Djokovic knocked down the towering South African Kevin Anderson in straight sets during the Wimbledon final. It more or less marked his comeback from ongoing injuries as official and Djokovic has not slowed up since.

The semifinals loss to Thiem at the French Open is nothing to be ashamed of. Djokovic played well at the clay court slam. He also knocked out rising ATP star Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals. That victory was an impressive straight set win.

Djokovic must be considered the player to beat at Wimbledon as of right now. He is the defending champion, world number one, and is continuing to play well on the 2019 ATP Tour. Despite his loss at Roland Garros, Djokovic won Wimbledon, the US Open, and the Australian Open all within the past year. He has countless big match wins over top players.

The early contenders to challenge him will of course be the likes of Roger Federer, Nadal, Zverev, Thiem, and a dozen or so veterans such as Gael Monfils, John Isner, Anderson again, and Kei Nishikori. Men’s singles remains highly competitive, especially with some younger stars such as Stefanos Tsitsipas coming onto the scene.
