Patrick Mouratoglou’s Ultimate Tennis Showdown is set to soon begin. It’s quite possibly the key to a new future in the sport of tennis. Here’s how.

Countless new ways to re-imagine tennis have sprung up over the last few months while the season is under suspension. Arguably the most sport-defining creation is Patrick Mouratoglou’s Ultimate Tennis Showdown.

The French coach has seen many of the game’s top players from both the old and the new generations. He’s worked with superstar Serena Williams, as well as ATP stars Marcos Baghdatis and Grigor Dimitrov (both of whom have reached the top ten in the world). He also works with young stars Stefanos Tsitsipas and Coco Gauff at his world-renowned Academy.

Mouratoglou sat down with TC Live on June 5th to discuss the upcoming event and how it will change the game of tennis. Already bringing in top players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and David Goffin, the event is going to feature a new format in tennis, created by Mouratoglou and on the backs of his opinion that the game of tennis needs change.

"“I realize [tennis] is a bit old-fashioned, he said. “The world has changed a lot these past 40 years. The way people consume sports, the way they consume videos have completely changed, and tennis has not.”"

One of his principal theories in the new format is allowing players to share their emotions with the crowd, bringing back the dynamic atmosphere of decades prior.

“We propose a new way to showcase tennis. Trying to bring much more emotion, trying to bring much more of a dynamic and modern show, and see if people are attracted to that more than tennis the way we know it.”

He also touched on his desire to speed up the sport to better adapt it to the modern age.

“I think the format of tennis is too long. There is too much downtime with not enough happening…the idea is to find the format of the future of tennis.”

The future of tennis, at least in the short-term, is in Mouratoglou’s hands. His Tennis SHowdown remains as one of the top upcoming tournaments, even as many new exhibitions events get scheduled with top players.
