6. Pablo Carreno Busta

2020 US Open finish: QUARTERFINALIST

Carreno Busta’s quarterfinal appearance has played second fiddle to the Novak Djokovic disqualification two days ago but make no mistake about it, he’s been in this situation before. Carreno Busta didn’t drop a set on his way to the 2017 US Open semifinals and looked solid in a tight four-set loss to Kevin Anderson.

It’s going to be quite a tough quarterfinal match for the Spaniard to win tonight given the fact that his opponent, Denis Shapovalov, has already had a match to prepare for the type of player that he is. Carreno Busta is an extremely solid baseliner that focuses on consistency and smart advancements to the net in order to take points, very similar to the way David Goffin plays (Shapovalov’s 4th Round opponent).

The key for victory tonight for Carreno Busta is going to be centered around stretching points. Both players have the ability to play a five-set match; Shapovalov’s inconsistency might be his only chance to sneak through, although the probability isn’t in his favor.

7. Alex de Minaur

2020 US Open finish: QUARTERFINALIST

De Minaur has played some fantastic tennis. He certainly wasn’t many people’s pick to get through this far but has shown that his incredible quickness and agility, combined with his stable all-around game, is enough for him to reach his first career Grand Slam quarterfinal.

He caught a huge bout of bad luck, though. Playing in the Half of Death, he finds himself set to face 3-time Grand Slam finalist, Dominic Thiem, with Daniil Medvedev possibly waiting for him if he does somehow manage to sneak through. His bout with Thiem is going to be an interesting one, for sure. Power versus quickness is always intriguing but, in most cases, power prevails.

De Minaur is only 21 years old; his potential is through the roof. We’ll surely be seeing him in more second weeks for a long time coming.
