Coco Gauff continued her strong play on clay, defeating Italian Camila Giorgi in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 on Wednesday.

Gauff was coming off of a tight match against Kaia Kanepi in the previous round, in which Gauff won 7-6, 7-6, in a match that took over two hours to complete. It was a relatively straightforward win for the 17-year-old American on Wednesday, taking the match in just one hour and 11 minutes.

In the first set, Coco Gauff capitalized on every Giorgi second serve, winning seven of the nine points on her second serve. Gauff also did not face a single break point in the first set and was able to covert on two of her five break point chances she had in the set.

The second set was a little closer as Giorgi had four break points and was able to convert on one of them. However, Giorgi faced a lot of break points of her own in the second set, and although she saved four of them, Gauff was able to break her three other times.

The real difference in the match was the 1st serve points won, as Gauff was able to win over 81% of the points on her first serve, while Giorgi was only able to win 57.6% of the points on her first serve. It also did not help that Giorgi won only 34.8% of the points on her second serve, while Gauff won over 40% of her second serve points, according to the WTA tour match stats.

Next up for Coco Gauff is a match-up against a fellow American teenager, 19-year-old Amanda Anisimova. This will be the first meeting between the two on the WTA tour, as they will battle it out for a spot in the semifinals. Anisimova should be well rested coming into Thursday’s quarterfinal, as her round of 16 match was played on Tuesday, where she defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova in straight sets in just under an hour and a half.
