Delbonis advances and Basilashvili falls in early Wednesday action at the Belgrade Open
In the first two round of 16 matches of the day on Wednesday, it was Federico Delbonis who defeated Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-4, while Nikoloz Basilashvili was upset by the qualifier from Slovakia, Andrej Martin, 1-6, 6-4, 6-7(4).
In the first match of the day, it was Delbonis who advanced in the marathon match, which took three hours and seven minutes to complete. There really was not much separating the two in the match, as both Delbonis and Monteiro each had the same number of breaks of serve. They both had 14 chances to break in the match, but yet each of them converted only four times, according to Infosys ATP Stats. Monteiro actually led the match in aces, first serve percentage, first serve points won, and second serve points won percentage. This is one of those rare matches where the player who won more points in the match actually lost, as Monteiro won 52% of the points.
In the second match, it was the first career meeting between Andrej Martin and Nikoloz Basilashvili on the ATP tour. Andrej Martin started the match exceptionally well, taking the first set easily 6-1. Basilashvili would bounce back though in the second set, taking it 6-4 and forcing a decider. In that decider, it would be Martin who would end up getting the best of Basilashvili, taking the third set tiebreak 7-4, and ending the match in just under two hours and 30 minutes. Basilashvili had a tough time with his second serve on Wednesday, double faulting 12 times in the match to go along with no aces. Martin on the other hand had three aces to go with two double faults, according to Infosys ATP Stats. The key stat in the match was the break points converted, as each had their fair share of break point chances. Basilashvili had eight breaks of serve on 18 chances, which is a 44% conversion rate, while Martin had nine breaks on just 13 chances, giving him a conversation rate of 69% on break points. That would be the difference in the tight match, as Martin was just able to play the bigger points better.
Next up for Federico Delbonis will be the winner between Gael Monfils and Roberto Carballes Baena in the last match of the day on Wednesday, while next up for Andrej Martin will be the winner between Jeremy Chardy and Dusan Lajovic.
