Daniil Medvedev got his first career win at the French Open on Monday, defeating Alexander Bublik in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. After losing in the first round at Roland Garros the first four times in his career, Medvedev finally advanced to the second round on his fifth attempt.

When the draw came out, everyone circled this matchup between Bublik and Medvedev, as many predicted it would be a close match. Medvedev proved why he is the number two player in the world, and even on his least favorite surface, he was able to beat Bublik in a convincing fashion.

Medvedev was great on both the first and second serve in the match, winning 79% of the points on the first serve and 53% on the second, according to Infosys Match Centre. Bublik on the other hand won 66% of the points when getting his first serve in, and only 32% on the second.

Bublik came into the net often throughout the match, coming in a total of 39 times, which was 17 more times than Medvedev did. In the end, coming in did not work too well for Bublik, as he only won 54% of the points when coming in, which was just slightly higher than Medvedev’s 50% when coming in.

Both had their fair share of break point opportunities in the match, but Medvedev was simply better on these key points. Medvedev broke Bublik seven times in the match, while Bublik only broke Medvedev three times.

Unforced errors really cost Bublik in this match, as he had 45 unforced errors to go along with just 27 winners. Eight of those 45 errors came from double faults alone. Medvedev had 29 less unforced errors, and actually had one more winner than Bublik.

Next up for Medvedev will be the winner between American Tommy Paul and Australian Christopher O’Connell.
