It is no coincidence that the players with the most Masters 1000 titles of all time are also the players in the greatest of all time discussion.
It takes a lot to win a Masters title, as each draw is loaded with the top players in the world. Many great players may skip ATP 250 or ATP 500 events throughout the year, but unless they are injured, every player wants to compete for a Masters 1000 title. Here are the seven greatest Masters 1000 champions since the Masters 1000 series began in 1990.
7. Thomas Muster – 8 Masters 1000 titles
Thomas Muster won eight Masters 1000 titles in his career across four different tournaments.
His first win came in 1990 at the ATP Masters 1000 Rome. He would go on to win that tournament three times in his career, winning in 1995 and 1996. Muster was also a three-time winner of the Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo.
Muster’s two other titles came in Essen on carpet and in Miami on hard court. He had his best season in 1995 when he won 12 titles, which included three at Masters 1000 events.
6. Pete Sampras – 11
An 11-time Masters 1000 champion, Pete Sampras won at five different Masters tournaments in his career.
Sampras lifted the trophy three times at the Masters 1000 events in Miami and Cincinnati. He was also a two-time champion in Indian Wells and Paris.
Sampras won one of his 11 Masters 1000 titles on clay, which came at the Masters event in Rome in 1994.
5. Andy Murray – 14
Andy Murray’s last Masters 1000 win came in 2016.
His Masters victories have come in Canada (3), Shanghai (3), Miami (2), Cincinnati (2), Madrid (2), Paris, and Rome. His three Shanghai titles are the second most in ATP history.
Murray’s best season was in 2016 when he won Wimbledon, an Olympic gold medal, and three Masters 1000 titles.
4. Andre Agassi – 17
Andre Agassi won three Masters 1000 titles in a season twice in his career, which occurred in 1995 and 2002.
He is currently tied for the most Masters 1000 Miami titles with six, winning in 1990, 1995, 1996, 2001, 2002, and 2003. Agassi is a three-time champion at the Masters 1000 events in Canada and Cincinnati.
His remaining victories have come in Paris (twice), Madrid, Rome, and Indian Wells.
3. Roger Federer – 28
Roger Federer won 28 Masters 1000 titles in his career, with his first one coming in 2002.
From 2004-2007, Federer won at least two Masters 1000 titles each year and won four in a season twice in that span. His most successful Masters event came in Cincinnati, where he won a record seven times. He also holds the record for most titles at the ATP Masters 1000 Hamburg, a tournament Federer has won four times.
Federer’s Masters 1000 victories include Cincinnati (7), Indian Wells (5), Hamburg (4), Miami (4) Madrid (3), Canada (2), Shanghai (2), and Paris.
2. Rafael Nadal – 36
Rafael Nadal is the only player in history to have 10 or more titles at a single Masters 1000 event, which he has done twice in his career. He has 11 titles in Monte Carlo and 10 in Rome.
Nadal has won at least four Masters 1000 tournaments in a season twice in his career, with his best year coming in 2013 when he had five.
Nadal’s remaining Masters 1000 titles have come in Madrid (5), Canada (5), Indian Wells (3), Hamburg, and Cincinnati.
1. Novak Djokovic – 38
Novak Djokovic has the most Masters 1000 titles ever with 38 in his career thus far.
Djokovic is one of only two Masters 1000 champions to hold the record for most titles at four different Masters 1000 tournaments (Nadal). His best year came in 2015 when he won six Masters 1000 titles.
Djokovic’s 38 Masters 1000 titles consist of six Miami, six Rome, six Paris, five Indian Wells, four Shanghai, four Canada, three Madrid, two Cincinnati, and two Monte Carlo titles.
