Match preview:
Lesia Tsurenko vs Kateřina Siniaková
Tsurenko-Siniakova is also another match to look out for on day 2 of the Merida Open. Tsurenko had an incredible start to 2023 already- finishing as a finalist at the Hua Hin Championships held in Thailand a few weeks ago. This was Lesia best result, and first final in over 5 years. Her last final? The 2018 Brisbane International. Siniakova on the other hand has had incredible success in doubles rather than singles. In January she won the Australian Open doubles title alongside Krejčíková-but in singles she is yet to make her mark with a deep run in 2023.
Camilla Osorio vs Magda Linette:
Camilla Osorio, a player from Colombia who experienced an unbelievable junior career, and has slowly but surely become a tougher opponent. With wins against players such as Daria Kasatkina to her name, Osorio has become something of a dark horse in recent times. To date in 2023, Camila has made the semi-final already on the WTA tour-losing to Caroline Garcia in a very tight 3 set affair in the semi-final of Lyon a few weeks ago. Her opponent will be Magda Linette from Poland- a player who has had an astronomical season to date. Magda Linette shocked the tennis world when she made the semi-final of the Australian Open in January- losing to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka.
Alycia Parks vs Fernanda Contreras Gomez
Lastly another match to look out for- simply to see the progression of a young star, is the match between Alycia Parks and Fernanda Contreras Gomez. Alycia Parks will be up against the young wildcard from Mexico, and will be looking to make the round of 16 of yet another tournament. This will be an incredible feat for Parks if she manages to achieve it-given she is gunning this week for her first ever time making consecutive quarter finals at the professional tennis level
