History made: Novak Djokovic wins US Open for 24th major title

September 10, 2023, will go down as a day in the tennis history books. A day after Coco Gauff won her first major, Novak Djokovic won his record-breaking 24th major title by defeating Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. With the title, Djokovic pulls one major ahead of Serena Williams and now has the most singles majors in the open era. Djokovic is now tied with Margaret Court for the most singles majors of all time.

Tennis fans and commentators have long talked about how Novak Djokovic can enter “lockdown mode.” In essence, this refers to when Djokovic steels himself to get every ball back and not make an unforced error. While he was not at his best during the entirety of the tournament or final match, Djokovic went into lockdown mode at key moments to finally claim his elusive 24th major.

Many fans were disappointed when Daniil Medvedev spoiled a potential major final rematch between Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz. However, Medvedev played a very high-quality match in the finals.

Daniil Medvedev has beaten Novak Djokovic in the US Open finals before, and it looked like he may do so again after had a set point in the second set against a seemingly winded Djokovic.

However, Medvedev picked the wrong side on a passing shot attempt and squandered his chance. Djokovic won the set and never looked back.

G.O.A.T. Discussion Ended?

Love him or hate him, Novak Djokovic already entered the tournament with many believing him to be the greatest of all time. With the US Open crown, the G.O.A.T. debate is all but ended. Expect Djokovic to win at least a few more majors as the cherry on top of his incredible career, even if Carlos Alcaraz might try to stand in his way.
