Coco Gauff gets ‘congrats’ from some very important people
By Lee Vowell
Coco Gauff has been just below the top players on the WTA tour for some time. Well, I write “some time” though she is only 19 years old. Doesn’t it just seem like Coco Gauff has been around for a decade already?
But after winning the US Open just a few weeks after winning the Western and Southern Open, Gauff now is likely playing the best tennis of anyone on the WTA tour. Is she the best overall player right now? Possibly. Therefore, a number 1 ranking might not be far off. That probably won’t happen until at least 2024, however.
But Coco Gauff’s US Open did not go unnoticed. Far from it. The New York crowds turned out in droves to support her, more and more as the tournament went on. And while the heat was intense in New York, Coco Gauff, who is used to playing in the south Florida heat, brushed the heat off in style and as if she was playing on an early autumn day.
Coco Gauff wins the US Open and gets some major congratulations
But you know you’ve accomplished something great when not one but three United States presidents take notice of you winning a tennis tournament. President Joe Biden, the current leader of the United States, took time out of his Group of 20 summit in New Delhi, India, to actually call Gauff after her victory. “Hey, Coco…can you take this call?” “Who is it?” “Oh, just the president of the United States of America.”
Former President Barack Obama not only tweeted his congratulations to Gauff, but he and his wife, Michelle, came to watch the US Open final. Then after the match, Gauff met with the Obamas. How awesome would that moment have been for the 19-year-old Gauff?
Former President Bill Clinton also tweeted out his congrats to Coco Gauff. Clinton even mentioned how “bright” the future of American tennis looks. And he is correct. Plus, that goes for American tennis on the women’s side as well as the men’s side. It is a fun time to be a fan of American tennis, for sure.
