How must Carlos Alcaraz feel after losing to Novak Djokovic in the semifinal of the ATP Finals? Alcaraz served brilliantly, landing 84 percent of his first serves and did not miss a first serve for some time to start the match, and yet Novak Djokovic defeated the Spaniard 6-3 6-2. Djokovic broke Alcaraz three times.

To be sure, Carlos Alcaraz would have defeated nearly any other player on the ATP tour on Saturday, but instead, he ran into the greatest player ever playing at his best and Djokovic showed how much better he can be than anyone else. Djokovic had just 7 unforced errors and wasn’t broken.

Alcraz did have quite a few more winners (22) but a lot more unforced errors (18) than Djokovic. Again, Alcaraz did not play poorly, but Djokovic just remained composed and machine-like and there was no beating him. I don’t mean that Carlos Alcaraz couldn’t beat him on Saturday, but that no one ever would likely have beaten Novak Djokovic. He simply played too cleanly.

Novak Djokovic destroys Carlos Alcaraz and moves to final of ATP Finals

Now Djokovic is set up to play Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals. The match will be played at 6 pm local time and 12 pm ET in the United States. Sinner is going to have the crowd firmly behind him, but Djokovic knows that. Of course, Sinner defeated Djokovic in the round-robin stage, but a player beating Djokovic twice in a week is highly unlikely.

If Sinner does defeat Djokovic, the Italian will win $4.8 million and 1,500 ATP tour points. Sinner is the only player at the 2023 ATP Finals to have not lost a match in the tournament. The only match Novak Djokovic lost was to Sinner.

Sinner is playing high-level tennis, of course, and with a great amount of confidence. Djokovic hasn’t played great tennis in the tournament until the semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz. Still, if Djokovic plays like he did against Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner will not beat him.
