Alexander Zverev is trying to break a record. Should he win the BMW Open in 2026, it would mark his fourth title at the event. He would have earned more trophies from the Munich event than any other player. What was clear in the second round this year was that Gabriel Diallo was not going to get in his way.

Diallo isn't a bad player, and the 24-year-old Canadian might be a dangerous player at Wimbledon. He is 6'8" with a huge serve and can come to the net well enough. While statistically, clay isn't his worst surface, he also hasn't been overly successful on clay. He has a losing record in his career in tournaments that play on the red dirt.

Zverev, on the other hand, is a master on clay. He hasn't yet won a French Open, or any other major, but that would appear to be the one he has the best chance of taking. Maybe even as soon as this year.

Diallo might have even had a chance at a deeper run in Munich had he faced nearly any other player, but he had no chance against the German. Zverev smothered the Canadian from the opening set, landing 76 percent of his first serves and saving the only break point he saw.

Meanwhile, Diallo staved off only one of four break points and won only 47 percent of the first serves he landed. He didn't return poorly, and he moved around the court well enough, but Zverev just kept pushing him side to side, and was in complete control in taking the opening set 6-1.

Diallo raised his level in the second set, but it wasn't nearly enough to keep the German at bay. After staying even in the first part of the set, Zverev got the only break he would need at 3-2 and then consolidated the break with an easy hold. To compound the issue for the Canadian, Zverev then got another break to take set two 6-2.

Alexander Zverev, the clear favorite to win the BMW Open, will next play Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals. The Argentinian is a good clay-court player, but Zverev will be the heavy favorite.
