Alexandra Eala tried to do a few different things against Jasmine Paolini in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2026. She shifted where she stood on returns of serve; she attempted to hit fewer shots cross-court, and sometimes the change worked, and sometimes it failed miserably.
What Eala, the 21-year-old Filipina wunderkind who has been making history early in her career by being the first player from her nation to reach different levels at important tournaments, was learning at Wimbledon, though, was that she didn't have the experience of Paolini. Eala didn't know what she didn't know, but she was learning quickly.
For a bit, though, she didn't know how to adjust once Paolini changed her approach when needed. Paolini doesn't have the power of many of the top players on the WTA tour, but she has learned to use her speed and excellent hands to her advantage. She understands how to do one shot well, and then do it again the same way the next time she has the opportunity.
Alexandra Eala taught a valuable lesson by Jasmine Paolini at Wimbledon 2026
In a tense first set, Paolini broke Eala in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead, but Eala broke back to get to 4-5 and on serve. The issue, which would become common over the course of the match, is that whenever the Filipina appeared to gain some control, the Italian would immediately change the narrative. Paolini got another break of her opponent to take the opening set 6-4.
The second set was fairly brutal for both players when trying to hold serve. Paolini was broken in the third game, but immediately broke back. Eala got another break at 3-all, desperately attempting to wrest the match from her older opponent. Finally, even after falling to 15-40, she was able to hold to force the set to 5-3, and eventually took the set 6-4.
Oddly, it was Paolini, a Wimbledon finalist in 2024, who appeared to tighten up at the end of the second set, even while she was holding the one-set lead. Still, she had played far too much tennis in her career not to understand the match was changing and not to her benefit. She wouldn't suddenly crumble under the pressure of the match.
After each player held serve throughout the third and final set, Paolini got the break at 4-3, then held to take the set 6-3 and send Alexandra Eala home. The Filipina will win important events in the future, but the more experienced and poised Paolini taught her a valuable lesson in the fourth round.
Jasmine Paolini will next play Marta Kostyuk in the quarterfinals. Kostyuk defeated Ashlyn Krueger in her fourth-round match at Wimbledon 2026.
