Tennis gets no more interesting than a battle that pits Aryna Sabalenka versus Coco Gauff. One is the most consistent player on the WTA tour, and the other is capable of elite athleticism that maybe no other player can match. This is why the 2026 Miami Open final was set up to be must-watch tennis.
Even before the match, Gauff was a winner in the event. She moved up to No. 3 on the tour, bypassing the suddenly inconsistent Iga Swiatek. Sabalenka had a stranglehold on the top spot, but still needed to win the Masters 1000 for the second-straight year not to drop any points. Still, even if she had lost, her lead over new No. 2 Elena Rybakina was a large margin.
The first set was completely Sabalenka, though. She was powering the ball past Gauff, who is an elite defender. While the American didn't struggle too much with double faults (she had three, a normal number for Gauff), an issue she has to fix eventually, Sabalenka still got two breaks and took the set 6-2.

While the American landed a reasonable 62 percent of her first serves, she won just 56 percent of those points. She faced seven break points, and Sabalenka had none.
Coco Gauff wasn't playing poorly, but the Belarusian was performing at an elite level. When she does that, she is unbeatable.
But Gauff and Sabalenka's matches aren't normally so straightforward. Their battles can change from set to set as if what happened in the previous one never happened. After trading holds of serves through the second set, one in which the players would deliver one exquisite forehand with one fantastic backhand. It was high-level tennis, but Gauff broke through in the final game.
She had tested Sabalenka's serve much more than in set one, often pushing the WTA No. 1 to deuce or break, only for Sabalenka to fight back. She couldn't, serving at 4-5, and the Miami Open crowd, firmly behind the home-state player, exploded when Gauff got the break to even the match at a set apiece.
The narrative of the match changed drastically and immediately at the beginning of the third set. Guaff was broken relatively easily. She is the kind of player who normally raises her level in third sets, and there would still be time for her to do so, but she would be playing from behind throughout the set for some time.
Sabalenka kept holding to get to 4-2, at which point a part of the rowdy crowd became too rowdy and began making noise during the middle of points in favor of Gauff. The chair umpire had to issue a warning several times, but the Belarusian was clearly miffed. Gauff held the next game at love to get to 3-4 with Sabalenka serving next.
Not to be outdone, Aryna Sabalenka delivered a brutally efficient service game, and also held at love. Whatever crowd noise had bothered her wasn't going to keep her from reaching a second-straight Miami Open title, and complete the 2026 Sunshine Double, as she also won Indian Wells.
After getting back to 30-all on Coco Gauff's service game, the Belarusian hit a magnificent overhead to get to 40-30. The American then hit a backhand wide on the next point and Sabalenka had her second break of the set to take the match 6-2 4-6 6-3.
