Ben Shelton is still trying to become the long-term alpha of American tennis, and part of him achieving that will need to be consistent high-end results on a surface that has often dogged American players: Clay. He does have a clay-court title, but that came in Houston in 2024. Winning one in Europe would matter more.

To take the title at the BMW Open, however, he would need to get by rising star Joao Fonseca, a Brazilian who has shown himself to be a challenge on clay even though he is just 20 years old. Fonseca has a big serve, like Shelton, and moves well. The outcome of their quarterfinal match might simply come down to which was more consistent.

In the first set, that was Shelton. After each player held somewhat easily until the American led 4-3, Shelton was able to get a break and then another hold. His 6-3 first-set victory felt even more dominant than the score showed.

The ATP No. 6 never faced a break point and won 94 percent of his first serves. Meanwhile, Fonseca hit just three winners, but he had 10 unforced errors. He was playing slightly off his normal form, and Shelton was raising his.

Still, one set does not a match make, and the American knew he couldn't afford to relax at any point. Fonseca's serve in the second set didn't allow him to, either. Both players went back to holding with relative ease overall, though Shelton did have a chance to break early in the set. That he didn't might have changed the narrative of the match.

Serving at 3-4, though, Shelton failed to put a point away on a smash, and Fonseca hit a defensive lop that stayed in. The American eventually lost the point, and that seemed to rattle him a bit. He would end up getting broken, and the Brazilian would hold in the next game to close out the set and even the match, 6-3.

The third set took the same route as the first, though. Shelton served brilliantly, dropping only three points in the set on his serve, and getting a break midway through. The outcome of the match seemed certain at that point (Shelton took set three 6-3), and getting a victory against Joao Fonseca on clay was absolutely an important victory.

Ben Shelton will next face the winner of the Denis Shapovalov and Alex Molcan quarterfinal match. The American should be the heavy favorite against either of those players.
