The next match is interesting.

The 2026 Rome Masters tussle between two of the best young stars on the WTA tour turned out to be exactly what fans hoped. Coco Gauff's athleticism versus Mirra Andreeva's precise shot-making was bound to be good, and neither player did not perform well.

Andreeva had a fantastic game plan heading into the match. She wasn't going to try to outmove Gauff (no one does), but instead was going to use Gauff's power against her by keeping points alive and hitting to the corners. The thinking was likely that Gauff would beat herself with too many double faults and points of overhitting.

Patience would be needed, though, and the combustible Andreeva is not always elite in that regard. After playing with poise in set one, getting two breaks of service to Gauff's one, and being far superior to Gauff's, the Russian began to get flustered in the second set.

She appeared at times to be just on the verge of an emotional outburst, though she might have had a right to do so. She was the one struggling with her serve a bit and couldn't convert any of her break chances. While few games were easy for either player, Gauff evened the match, taking the second set 6-2.

To be sure, while each played brilliantly at times and struggled greatly in others, most of that was due to their elite opponent. The two players, as long as they can stay healthy, will be pushing for the top of the WTA rankings for many years to come. This meant the match was unlikely to remain a certain way. One could only hold the momentum for so long.

The third set featured tense games with some brutally poor decisions by Andreeva. Twice she tried a drop shot, but seemingly didn't care how hard or soft she hit the ball. Both times Gauff ran the ball down, and Andreeva couldn't answer the return. They both finished off games.

Gauff raced out to a 5-1 lead, but couldn't serve the match out. She does have a powerful serve, but she is the rare player who is almost as dangerous returning serve. After being broken to see her lead shrink to 5-2, Andreeva held, and Gauff was only one broken serve away from the match potentially going back to even.

Gauff had the same issue come up at the Madrid Masters in the previous tournament. She was up 4-1 in the third set against Linda Noskova, and the Czech came back to win in a tie break. That had to be weighing on the American after Andreeva did get the break to get the set back to 4-5, but on her serve.

On Andreeva's serve, Gauff had her third and fourth match points of the set, but once again couldn't pull through. Finally, after a bit over 13 minutes had gone by in the game, Gauff got the break, took the set 6-4, and won the match.

Coco Gauff will next play 36-year-old Sorana Cirstea in the semifinals. Cirstea is a great story herself, of course. She had announced this would be her final year playing professional tennis, but she is arguably playing in the best form of her career. Her semifinal appearance at the Italian Open, for instance, is the best of her career.
